My Name is Alice Tan

My name is Li Mei Tan, but you know, as same as many other Chinese people, not that many people know how to pronounce it right. Even though some people do, but they don’t know how to spell it correctly. I am Chinese, which is why my name looks like this—"Li Mei". Do you know how to pronounce my name? If you don’t, it is pronounced like "lee may". Lets forget about the name stuff, I am 16 years old, I am a Junior in Murry Bergtraum High School in New York City, USA. I am in the school choir, I think I sing OK, but my family hates my singing. Whenever I sing, most of the family members cover their ears. Now you know how stupid I am in my family.

Anyway, I am an immigrant; I came to New York 5 years ago from Canton, China. Just from last year, I became a great athlete in New York. Let me tell you the story. I was unprepared for my gym class a few times. The teacher was going to give me a 65. I was so worry. The teacher came to me and asked me if I wanted to join the track team (because he was the boy's team coach), if I join, he wouldn’t give me a 65. I thought, if I join the track, then he wouldn’t give me a low grade. So, I joined. But, he didn’t change the grade!!!!! After I joined the team, I was very excited. I tried every event on track, but I found out that I am not good at running. My coach, Mr. Goldberg, told me to learn how to racewalk, an event that athletes barely participate in. In the beginning, this "racewalk" stuff, made my shins hurt a lot. I wanted to quit. But, my coach gave me a lot of confidence, and said that I was very talented. I didn't let him down, I claimed the "Freshmen City Champion" in 3 months. Then, I wanted to stay.

Now, here I am, the "Sophomore City Champion", and I went to the State Championship where I dreamed to go when I was a freshman. Unfortunately, I did do well, I couldn’t get used to the track at Syracuse University, I came in 14th place and I got injured. I am still racewalking, I just have to go to the doctor once a week to check if my leg is OK. I claimed the Manhattan Borough championships tittle in racewalking for a few times already, I am now competing national championships. I am every happy for my victories.

Finally, I thank my gym teacher for giving me a 65 then I joined the track team. (I cried for this poor grade!!!!!!! I didn't talk with him for 3 months!!!) Oops! Sorry, I am so sorry for letting you hearing about my bored life. If you think you like me, or interested in racewalking, just e-mail me!!!
