The Bluest Eye--Toni Morrison

Pecola Breedlove has many problems in the story. Others who have different skin color than her do not accept her. Also, her father, Cholly rapes her and treats her badly mentally and physically. When Pecola Breedlove walks on the streets, there are always some people picking on her, laughing at her skin color and her look. There was a boy who took her to his house and made fun of her and said that she is ugly and she is black. At that time, she thinks that she would be as beautiful and as loved by others like the blond hair (white), blue-eyed children. Pecola has another problem. She ahs many nightmares about the rape. She wakes up in the middle of the night with sweat all over her. This is a reason why she wants to be white, she think s white people wouldn’t be raped by their parents.

Pecola wanted to change her eye color to blue so she goes to a church to ask the Priest for help. She tells the Priest that she is very depressed and wanting to change her eye color to blue. But, the Priest says he does not have the power to change anything that happened. Pecola left the Church.

Mrs. Breedlove finds out that Cholly, Pecola’s father has raped her daughter because she finds out about Pecola’s pregnancy. Mrs. Breedlove is very upset, she tells Cholly to leave her and Pecola alone. Soon after, Colly died of drinking too much of liquor. After Cholly’s death, Mrs. Breedlove still works at the "White House" were she worked as housekeeper for years. Even though the employer doesn’t treat her as well as before when her employer doesn’t know that she loves Cholly. (According to the story, Mrs. Breedlove’s employer seemed to have some mental illness and she likes Mrs. Breedlove.) Pecola is gone somewhere that no one knows where she is, even he best friend doesn’t know where is she. Some people were saying that she had a baby, some people were saying that she gone somewhere far away.
