Shasta Lake, CA, Jan 1999

What's Up?
 | Mar 4. Putting pages and images onto the web. I especially like the pictures of the Shasta Lake section. |
 | Mar 1. I've scanned a major portion of my film stock; the results are quite satisfactory
- I like my small film scanner. Now I've been able to fulfill one of my most ambitious
dreams: use the pictures I take myself for the wallpaper of my computer desktops! I'm
going to make a wallpaper gift for every of my friends when I have finished all the film. |
 | Feb 26. Still scanning the pictures. It turned out that I'll have to spend at least 5
minutes to get one single picture into the computer - put the film in, preview, hit the 1770dpi
button, hit the Scan button, wait for the scanner to read the bits then wait again
for Photoshop to import the picture, save it... I wish I had some program that can do all
these automatically. |
 | Feb 12. FortuneCity notified me that they accidentally lost all the content on my web -
on both their production servers as well as the backup disks!, stating that "The
hardware manufacturers stated that the mean time between failures is 1,000,000 hours (over
100 years), meaning the probability of two disks failing within 3 hours of each other is
almost impossible". The good news is that I, as a computer engineer, know how
unreliable a system could be, and keep a local copy of my pages. |
 | Feb 4. I've returned from our trip to the west coast of the US (What a trip - 4,600
miles, 12 days of driving, three times stuck in the snow, and once pulled over by the
police for speeding!). My film scanner has arrived, too. Now I'm busy scanning all my
pictures - the Olympus ES-10 scanner is quite good and I'm satisfied. |
 | Jan 9. Setting out to the States. There's gonna be some work to do. After that we'll
begin our west coast drive. |
 | Dec 20. Ordered an Olympus ES-10 film scanner. Considering rescanning all my old
pictures. |
 | Dec 10. I finally succeeded in persuading my friend Jack to buy into Nikon and he got an
F60 from B&H - actually I told him to get at least an F70. He was enthusiastic with
Cannon at first, until he found several decent Nikkor lenses (50 f/1.4 non-D, 35-135,
etc.) from his father's. |
