For those of you who loves "Jungle"
road, then this stretch from Jerantut to Kuala Lipis is superb. Coming
from that east-west direction and just 10 kilometers outside Benta,
you will not miss this huge signboard signaling the presence of a
relatively unknown "Bird Park" In my early visit in 1997, the place was operated by a Government agency that offered staying overnight facilities. I was not very much into birding then. I was shown the bird list and topping the list here were Peasants and ground birds. I was impressed! Then when I started birding on a regular basis, this destination was a "Must go" on my itinery. Sure enough, we were there. In the kampong at the junction, before we could turn in the approach road, we were greeted by 3 families of Long-tailed Parakeet. I would not know how the locals felt to the dins created by these monsters. That was all what we saw the whole day! On that day, the place was taken over by an individual! He assured us that "Hornbills" made daily fly past. Beyond what the new owner told us, we saw that the valley beside the road in was planted with matured fruit trees, replacing the pristine forest. On the left side of the road, the forest also gave way to an up and coming chicken farm. The forward sight towards the hills for the bird park was one of deforestation. |

Just wondering -There must be lots of
birds around this place to prompt the erection of such a signage. Nothing mentioned in any brochures from the Department of Tourism. Large worn off sign - Kemahang Bird Park

The garden though a we bit run down was
still in presentable conditions. The final approach into the "Park" compound. |

This is one impromptu signboard. Beside
the one on the main road showing "Kemahang Bird Park", this is the third
contradicting names to this place. The new "owner" attempting to re-classified this place. |

Another scene from the terraced garden.
It was planted with some species of uncommon Heliconias. Glad to see that
evidences of their heydays preserved. A terraced garden with expensive species of Heliconias - this place had seen better days. |

From this garden, the steps were the
trail head to a network of trails that traversed 2 hill slopes. The officer in my early visit confirmed that one of the trail did cross the hill over to the Lata Jeram in Ulu Dong. The highest pass here could not be over 300 meters high. From the "garden", trail head onto the slopes for proper birding

It was a fairly easy hike except
for the fact that the trail were not maintained. We saw Babblers, Woodpecker while the Barbets were calling continuously from the canopy. Scene of a typical trail, there were several forming a network.

On the trip that this picture was
taken, the durian season was in full swing. The "owner" of the Park who
could not attend to us, invited us to enjoy whatever fruits that we could
find in our hike. Ginger and ferns made up most of the undergrowth.
