Bird's life:- Bird species:- For budding birder :-
The "Old Gombak Road" is the original trunk road that connects places in the eastern parts of Peninsula Malaysia with that of the west coast. It cuts across the Main Range and meandering along the Mountain slopes-up and then down. The stretch of road mentioned frequently as birding spots, is that portion from the district of Gombak to the Pass aka the intersection to Genting Highlands .

Geographically, I would say the birding spots are located - starting from a milestone marked "50" i.e. 50 kilometers to Bentong town to the final point at the intersection, just after the "37" stone marker. That is to say- a 13 kilometers stretch. Both sides of the road are forested without residential or commercial buildings. To see your birds without knowing where to stop and peep, it must be a long way to walk and also lots of jungle to search! Where then are the best spots that would promise results to the causal visitors?

But before that - other deterrents that I must mention as well. They are -[a] be prepared to tolerate the unsightly rubbish that litter the road sides [b] do not be put on the alert constantly by speeding trucks. Having said that ,  good news is - the diversity of birds are still there. Not that easy to se them though. They stay at the upper storey, they stayed away from landing on the trees by the roadside or if they need to, they dashed across the opening without stopping.

The picture shows the last of complex along this stretch.

After that another row of Squatters houses, the jungle.

The "Starting" point of the Old Gombak Road.

The road opposite this signage leads to a popular picnic area and training camps. There is also a track prepared by the organizer that ran through pristine forest area. It is a broad and clean track but the entrance is well camouflaged.

With time constraint, this track is a good option by proximity

Look for this signage for a training camp, you are there! The birding spots

I would start to bird after this marker. Bird waves were very much less these days. The amount of debris's left on the roadside by irresponsible elements and the noises from the closeness of the new quarry threw the ambience away.

Landmarks for good spot, the milestones. This is one of them

The stretch before and around this place was promising and still is.

Overall, the hints that I followed in the choice of places to stop- a ravine with a flowing stream. Or a bend with a valley and made humid by flowing waters.

One of the few Indian Shrines

Another landmark to look for, would be the stretch before and after this field station. People who chose this vicinity knows the forest well. Their choice of terrain is still appropriate after all the years.

Another hint- My favorite spot was at the 44.75 kms, just a short distance from here.

Location of the Research Station -another good prompt

While you are there, don't forget, take time off from birding and enjoy the beautiful view

End of the line for Old Gombak Road.

Oh! One more reason why the birds are so shy!

They are constantly being used as target practice. These are the budding shooters. The seniors are more mobile with their little bikes.

My co-operative "Culprits" posing for a picture to my archives.

A favorite choice. - the largest shrine makes the place.
