Character of Lapinkoira

The Lapinkoira is originally from Lappland in the north of Finland. The Sameness, who has lived there, for a very long time, used the Lapinkoira on their Reindeer as a “sheepdog”. The Lapinkoira is related to the Samojededog, witch were bread by the Samojedepeople who lived in the Uralien Mountains.
The breading of Lapinkoira began in Finland in the 1940’s. The 2’end World war and the following years didn’t leave very well conditions for this kind of work. That is why, the historical background, origin and for the race typical instincts, wasn’t examined to thoroughly.
In the beginning of 1970 it came to the some people’s attention, that the dogs at the time being, in the Pedigree registry of Lapinkoira didn’t come from the originally
“Reindeer line” in Lappland. The Finish Kennel Club opened a new Pedigree registry of the Lapinkoira, so that they could get the originally “sheepdog instincts” based on longhair Lapinkoira from the Reindeer area. After the opening of the registry they found 43 dogs that meet the following demands:
The dog must come from a known breeder, who has worked whit the race for a long time, and who has bread dogs that can look after and drive Reindeer.
The dog must belong to a genetically “clean” and known “sheepdog” line.
Other races must not interrupt the look of the dog.

By the help of these 43 dogs and offspring, the people behind them has succeeded in preserving a unique race, which is one of the last European, originally by nature, kept “sheep-dogs”
The Swedish Kennel Club has had the race approved by the FCI in November 1985.
