Splashed white is another pattern that's often confused with overo. Its characteristics are a white belly and legs, white on the back of the butt, and a white face with blue eyes. Yes, that sounds remarkably like overo, but overos usually do not have white legs.
Splashed white is caused by a dominant gene, Spl.

This is chestnut splashed white (eeSpl-). Note the white on the belly, legs and tail, as if the horse had run through a pond of white paint, and the white on the face. Like sabino, splashed white is very similar to overo. Sometimes you just have to look at a lot of horses to get a feel for what makes one color or pattern different from another. |

This Icelandic mare is black splashed white (aaE-Spl-). Her foal shows a combination of splashed white and tobiano markings, and was obviously sired by a tobiano stallion. The foal's genotype is aaE-Spl-Tt. We know he's Tt and not TT, because his dam is tt. |
