The diapers I use on Andy and M.C. are "huggies new born"--Please
remember that my guys are very small so if your dog is around 5 pounds or
more to use the next size up which I think is their # 1--To use the
diapers--you need the diaper, a roll of 1 1/2 inch or 2 inch masking tape
and a pair of scissors--before I start giving directions let me say that
both my guys are in coat and it does not matt up if you > brush it back
before putting the diaper on--Also there are many brands of baby diapers
that are much cheaper but you get what you pay for--I have been doing this
for over 2 years > and have never had any problems--no irritations
etc.--so I stick to Huggies(tried the others)--also from time to time >
you can get sales coupons for them in the Sunday diaper--Now--take the
diaper and lay it on the table in > front of you like you were going to
use it on a baby--fold should be on the bottom and open end on top--open it
up--you now have a long diaper in front of you--take the scissors and trim
the elastic off of both sides--not the top and bottom but the sides ,trim
just up to the thickness on each side--your > cutting off the elastic
that would go around a babies leg--fold it in half again--holding diaper
with the fold on the bottom take the scissors and cut a half moon shape just
above the fold through both thicknesses-about 1 to 1 1/4 > inches long,
along the side, on one side only--open the diaper and you will now see two
half moon cutouts in the middle of one side--(this is becoming a book)--LOL--take
the tape and pull off a two or three inch piece of tape--fold one end under
about 1/4 inch--also fold the cut end under on the > roll about 1/4
inch--put tape on edge of table--get your dog--put him in front of you with
his head toward your left, and his tail to your right--take the diaper and
put it under his belly with the cutout shapes towards his legs(rear) this
allows him ease in walking and sitting-- when you put it under his belly
take time to check that the little hair at the end of his dinkler is tucked
in--you have to do this with belly > bands also--as the urine follows the
hair and if it's ticking out --guess what--puddles--on the top of his back
put one end of the diaper(printed) over the other and fasten with the
tape--run your hands along the edge of the diaper where the tape is to make
sure you don't have any hairs caught--I brush my guys sides each time I
change their diapers and they have not matted--remember to take the diaper
off when they go out to potty--the nice thing about this is that the diaper
> covers the faucet but not the jewels(dogs in tact)I know this sounds
long and confusing but it is a very simple thing to do and takes just a few
minutes once you get the hang of it and the funny part is that the dogs love
it and the extra attention--I have to give credit to a Yorkie breeder from
the Orlando area who told me about this--she has 9 in tact males in her
house and no doggy smell--hers line up to have their diapers put on-make
sure you put it on snugly not tight or too lose as they will walk out of
them(from experience) If anyone has any questions please feel free to
privately e-mail me and yes I make belly bands out of all materials--satin,
cotton etc--

I use elastic wrap for belly bands. I buy the wide roll that you use for a
sprain and cut it to fit around the private area of the male. I put velcro
on each end to close and cut a ladies personal pad in half and put it in the
middle of the band. I then close it over their back with the velcro. You can
make many bands from one roll and they are washablein case they get soiled.

Hi Sandy: Belly Bands are quite easy to make (if you're handy)... you can
make them fancy or just plain using good old white cotton tube sox. I'm not
the best when it comes to sewing ... but here's the basic idea ... either
using old cotton knee hi tube sox and/or a cotton poly mix material
...measure the dog around his middle ... then add appx two+ more inches. The
width of the material depends on the size of the dog ... cut off the heel
and toes. Double the material, sew togetherl ... add velcro on either end
... use a sanitary pad and put on.
I usually buy mine at dog shows ... usually the specialty toy dog shows. I
brought some great ones when we went to the SF Specialty ... the vendor
selling them was from Calif. Hopefully someone on the list will remember who
they were and have their number so you can order them. If I find their
business card I will gladly post the telephone number. They usually run
about $5.00. Maybe one of the committee members from previous specialties
still has the phone # and/or addresses of some of these vendors.
p.s. these are great when visiting non-doggie people who are always afraid
that you're male will lift his little leg ... I make sure my little Marcus
wears one when he goes visiting! gggg

I hope this helps Sandy, I keep a package of diposable diapers on hand. I
use Walmart brand size #1 for my guys. I trim the elastic off the sides and
have a belly band, which I secure with a piece of wide, clear, shipping
tape. Then simply dispose of it after a few three or four hours. You get 40
to a package for about $5.00. The price is right and sure comes in handy in
a pinch.

Marsha, I want to thank you for the information on "belly bands".
I am almost at wit's end with my little "Marker." Today I brought
groceries home, and sat them on the floor while I let someone else out. I
caught Kobi in the act of marking the plastic grocery bag. Thank goodness,
it was a plastic bag, and he stopped. He looked so proud of himself.
"These are MY groceries" was what the look said. "You mean
you don't want me to mark them, Mom?" grrrrrr I have a diaper, the
Denim-look type, but he gets matted when he wears it. Thanks.

I wanted to let you know that I appreciate the belly band info. I made one
out of an old jeans pant leg. Kobi is wearing it now. He seems happy since
he can be in the rooms with the rest of us, and no one is trying to grab him
and put him in the kitchen. I just made it today, and will report how he is
doing. He does think he is a smartie! Thanks.

I am very grateful. I put his little "jeans" on in the house, and
he is free to go anywhere. I even took the gate down. Now he doesn't sit
with his little face in the bars of the gate. He looked so pitiful. I have
two more full days at home before I go back to work. I am sure he is
happier. Thank you so much. I plan on trying the Huggies belly bands too.
Thatwill probably make him smell good, too.

I realize it's easier to let them just mark anywhere with the belly thing
on, but it is possible to teach them NOT to mark at all. I work with clients
quite often with this problem...with success.

Anne,
I actually use the belly bands to train them not to mark while saving my
house. We work with mill dogs so it is important that they learn what it is
like to be a pet and roam a house freely and the belly bands allow them to
do this. Generally after a week we have them not marking but my house would
be ruined without the aid of the band.

I found that when my dogs have them on after a few times , they do not even
wet in them. MyCuthburt used to cock his leg but the pad had only tiny spots
on. So I think it gets them used to not doing it so often as they can feel
something on there belly, so it does help. It is also ideal if you are going
to a Hotel
My two cents worth....

Marsha. So far so good at my house. It is a great feeling to let the little
guy wander around without carrying him or having a leash on, or feeling on
the floor around corners, or anything else. I wish I had asked sooner
myself.

Please don't misunderstand as I'm not criticizing anyone for the use of
belly bands; I'm just pointing out there is another option. I'm referring to
behavior modification. For some of us, belly band aren't an option It's just
a matter of preference.
Anne
Please share with us the behavior modification that can be used. I would
like to know as much as I possibly can.
Thanks,
