On
Saturday May 8th my Dad was outside cutting down some trees all morning.
He came inside to let me know that he was almost ready for me to help him
clean up the logs. He went back outside and I went to watch TV.
About 10 minutes later Jasper starts to bark very strangely at the door to the
garage. I thought that he just wanted to go out and see his
"Grandpa". I opened the door and at the bottom of the steps
was Dad passed out foaming at the mouth. He was unconsciousness and
trying to gasp for air. He would not respond to me at all. I started screaming
for Mom and ran to call 911. I will never know how I was able to
remember my address or phone number. While I was talking to the 911
person I was screaming for the portable phone so that I could follow the EMS
instructions. I ran up stars to get the portable and then back out to
the garage. During all this time Jasper is barking, I am screaming and
Mom is screaming. It was so chaotic. By the time I got back to
Dad in the garage he popped up and says "Oh I'm fine". So he
makes us cancel the ambulance, insisting all the while that nothing happened.
He
came in the house and says that he didn't pass out and that he is ok. But
thanks to Jasper, I saw him passed out so we knew he did. After about 15
minutes Mom and I convinced Dad to let me drive him to the hospital. They
immediately took him into emergency and after some tests the doctor tells us
he had a heart attack. It was all so scary. After we told people
at the hospital how Jasper save Dad's life, they made us bring him to the
hospital. They renamed him Hero Dog. If it weren't for Jasper we
would not have known dad passed out and how serious the situation was.
By getting him to the hospital quickly they were able to prevent a second
heart attack.
