Tempest's Pages

Rather than take up so much of your time with the first page, I've decided to write a bit about my pages here.

These pages were created when I found that it was next to impossible to find good information on herbs all in the same area. People can literally spend hours, days or even weeks in long frustrating searches for certain herbs or even a small list of herbs. Here, in these pages, you'll find as many herbs as I can research and post in this space. I've tried to make it a "one-stop-shop" so to speak, even though you are strongly encouraged to do more research, at least you'll have a basic idea of what an herb is, some of its common names, as well as its scientific name, and some of its uses.

Why would I do this.. and don't I have a life? I do this because there is a need for it, and yes, I do have a life, but since I'm doing the reasearch for myself anyway and typing it up, why not put it up for everyone to see? And, it's something I enjoy doing!

I know I said that I didn't have alot of room for graphics, yet you hear music on so many of my pages. Well, I only have 20 MB of space for this Website , which seems like alot, but really isn't and I have another Website elsewhere dedicated to RolePlaying and Animals to which I linked for all the music. The music, you'll find, is quite a mix, coming from classical music, cartoons, movies, and Japanese animation. While I'd love to have beautiful graphics and such on these pages, my other Website has no need of plant pictures and in addition, the music files took up more than 5 MB of space! So, to ensure that I get as much information crammed in here as possible, my herbal pages are fairly plain, though I did play around with the fonts a bit to dress things up.

One thing I tried to do with the music was not only bring some sound to some otherwise silent pages, but tried to use the sadder or more dangerous music for the herbs that were more dangerous and toxic

The Plant Pages

Each herb page is set up fairly simply:

First, it gives one of the herbs most common names. Next is listed its scientific name(s), then as many of the common names as I could find.

Next is the listing of the parts that are used, whether it's the whole plant, or just the roots, seeds, leaves, etc...

Then is the list of which body systems and body parts this particular herb affects. If many parts of a plant are used, but only one affects a certain part of the body, it will be listed in parentheses next to the body part or system.

Next is a list of actions. Actions are terms that describe what affect something has on the body. If only one part of the plant has a certain action, then that part of the plant will be listed next to the action in parentheses. If a plant tends to be very good at a particular action, I will list that action in capital letters to emphasize it.

Should I find that a certain plant is used in Chinese Medicine, Energy and Taste will also be listed. "Taste" doesn't always describe how a plant actually tastes. Burdock (Arctium lappa) is described by Chinese Medicine as having a "pungent and bitter" taste; however, it is actually kind of nutty.

Next are listed the uses where I try to show the applications of the plant, and its parts. When available, I will also list nutrients and toxins found in the plants.

Past the warnings, I've also listed "Notes:." These are things of interest that I've found that might, or might not have anything to do with the medicinal properties of the plant. In some pages I've listed harvesting and preparation notes while on others I've listed other uses for the plant or its origins. If I find some trivia I think might be enjoyed, I add it.

For those plants that are listed as TOXIC, once you get past the "Notes:" heading, you'll find a list of antidotes in case of poisoning. Some of these are rumored and some are proven, nonetheless, you should call a poison control center IMMEDIATELY if you think you or someone else has been poisoned.

And finally in the list is the bibliography. Books are one of my main sources of reference, though I also use alot of my own experience and the experiences of many of the other herbalists I know. In addition, I also use the occassional Web page to which I'll link back to.

This next part has no heading, but it is merely a list of the various ways this particular plant has been used in the past and is being used in the present. While many of these uses hold true, a few do not and haven't been proven to work by modern science, however, I still list them as they've been used in the past for such purposes and there may actually still be something to such tales, though science may have disproven them. In any case, the main uses of the plant will have been listed under the heading "Uses:" so if you want the real story, go there.

Contraindications, warnings and such are important as some herbs can be dangerous to people with certain conditions or on certain medications. While I've allowed myself to be a bit of an 'alarmist' in these and repeated every warning I've heard, I figured it was better to be safe than sorry and list them. However, most of the herbs I've come across are safe for most healthy, non-pregnant, non-nursing adults though I'm still not saying that the warnings should be disregarded!
