Check out the Selangor Coastline A very serene and most beautiful place to live in is along the coastline of the Selangor State. This is by narrow strip of land serviced by well paved roads. Covering 50 kilometers long along the Main Trunk, inland roads run parallel and sometimes just 200 meters away. So near to the main town yet no traffic at all to compete with you in these "Kampong " roads. |
This is one stretch where the villagers had planted banana trees along both sides of the road. This track was running beside a drainage canal. On this side is laterite while on the other side the thoroughfare was paved with bitumen. |
This low coastal plain is well drained with many canals criss crossing the rice fields and coconut plantations in rectangular pattern. Wooden bridge designed for light traffic completes the circuits. |
The ends of many canals see small coastal crafts parked on its banks when the fishermen were back from the sea. Beside boats for those who depended on fishing as a livelihood, these "piers" also serve as marinas for the sports fishermen. |
In other places, long stretches of mangrove forest are rehabilitated and converted into prawn farms. This place where the photograph was taken ran for kilometers. |
Certain spots where the mudflats did not stray far out to sea, the land was cleared erected sites to accommodate hawker's centers or "Padang Ikan bakar" |
In the midst of the mangrove forest, reforested or area where young trees dominate the scene, forest reserve or recreation park are gazette. The surrounding is suitable for boating and fishing. |
Now this is a spectacular sights! Thousands of concrete "soldiers" stand guard along the coast. Mangrove Forest that for years had protected the coastline were removed. The shoreline left unprotected allowed the seas to gradually eats inland. |
These concrete stumps that break up the forces of the waves, put a brake on the intrusion. Since the coastline is long, the lining up of these stumps is quite an unique sight to city dwellers. |
The mere presence of these stumps were inadequate to complete the task. Waves can also still uproot their foundations. To overcome the handicap and to reinforce its effectiveness, large granite boulders were placed on the mudflats for the sea water to roll over and interrupting the forces of the undercurrent. |
Lighter particles, in this case myriads shells from the mudflats were deposited along the entire coast, making it shore of shells. It is a pity that the cottage industry has not caught up with the idea of converting these beautiful shells as souvenir items. |
In another part of the bay, the action of the waves had sorted out the shells by sizes. In this area, the whole beach were laden with other species of shells. They are finer and mixed with the lighter and broken pieces. I need not go to Krabi or the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand to collect my sands of "calcium". There is also another stretch of shore with fine sands made of smashed coral shell. There was a noticeable presence of oyster shell, indicating that this area do support live oyster in the sea bed. |
It was a fantastic day spent discovering the whole vicinity. Like small children, we were collecting an assortments of shells to decorate our souvenir cupboard. |
Sekinchan, a large "Padi" town in this district was made famous by its roadside stalls selling maize. These days more stalls were lining up the main road. They have also expanded the wares to include fruits. |
