It is wet up north -Checking Yan Waterfalls in the rain

The town of Yan

Towns around here have single syllable like Yan & Sik . This is small and remote township on the western slope of the solitary Gunong Jerai seldom visited by outsiders.

Facing the Andaman Sea and with the full force of the monsoon weather, the western slope holds the sources to many rivers and waterfalls. On this signboard outside Yan town itself, there are 3 waterfalls named!

We had checked the region for the waterfalls. Air Terjun Puteri Mandi is nothing but a Recreation Park. Fully equipped with hawkers stalls and change room facilties. There the River flows right through the park at its rapid stage.

Rippling water and huge boulders but yet shallow stream.

In the upper reaches of this seasonal river, there is a tall vertical fall of over 300 feet, about 1.5 kilometers from the Park. This majestic waterfall draws the crowd and a welcome sight to all visitors.

Batu Hampar, a waterfall we intended to check out lies amidst of tempting fruits orchards. A lonely village road meanders 5 kilometers passed numerous villages before ending up at the purported "Waterfalls" area.

Then a low but narrow ravine houses the river, at this stage the river is going through a rapid that triggers off imaginations as a restful site!

Sungei Perigi Waterfall

In order not to be confused by names of town in the Yan district, this waterfall is in Yan Kechil and not Yan.

This is a view from another small town - Yan Kechil. A short laterite road leads to the waterfall after turning into a 3 kilometers among the rice fields. This waterfall can be seen from the main road to Yan, located some distance up the northern slope behind the rice fields.
There are visitors to this waterfall but much less as compared to that in Yan.

Water drop down a near vertical slope in 2 cascade. The top cascade should be about 40 meters while this one on the right about 80 meters.

At the base of the waterfall are broken boulders and not weathered. Then another 20 meters downstream a shallow dam barricades the stream to form a pool.

Picnic areas with waterfall always look dramatic, this waterfall has that pre-requisite, but it lacks in shade and clear water! Somehow this stream carries down stored water from the undergrowth- rustic coloured . perhaps these 2 reasons influenced the locals on their choice
