Checking on Cameron Highlands

Ever wondered about the distance of that long winding road hugging to the side of the mountain to Cameron Highlands? Which destination?

This signboard copied from the highway should be the most reliable source. Now moving at an average speed of 30 kph. That should also give a fair estimate of the time required

Upon reaching the highlands, this is yet another signboard giving updated details as to the distance to each and every small community! Reference point here, a reading taken outside Ringlet.

This information should put to ease many disturbing queries.

Town of Ringlet

Ringlet is a small township serving the farming community. The town is located inside a ravine with the main road making a loop around and above the entire village.

The main road forming almost a ring around the town. "let" send forth an idea or feeling of something small.

The high-rise buildings seen on the far end, are new shop lots and dwellings on higher grounds alongside the "ring" road. A deviation from the earlier concept of the close knitted community inside the protective valley.

Town of Tanah Rata

As the name suggest, this is the original township on the plains of the plateau in Cameron Highlands.

Today Tanah Rata have changed from a gathering of resort homes and vacation bungalows to a small but thriving commercial center. Shops, terminal for tour buses and entertainment hub for those in the highlands.

Do your shopping, eating here and then decide your possible destinations within the highlands from this point.

Town of Brinchang

Like Ringlet, Brinchang is another town serving the farming community.

This township is the center for visitors meeting up or visiting those horticulture farms. An area with many "show farms" for flowers, cacti and selected vegetable plots!

As a stop-over point, there will be an overspill of visitors seeking refreshments and meals. Here, on the right, is a hawker center for the Camerons.

Away from the townships- the highlands, valleys and mountain slopes offer wide spectrum of never ending panoramic sights.

An unusual scene - mountain slopes being terraced to accommodate farming. Excellent example to dispel the believe that the rich soil of the favorable plateau ground is the backbone for Cameron farming success.

Very little known and jealously protected, this unique plot of environment. The Mossy forest! Numerous species of mosses thrive on the rotting vegetations to create an environment seldom seen elsewhere!

Rest House in Tanah Rata

Now there was a Rest House in the Cameron Highlands!!!

Hey Presto! It is not difficult to find. It is in Tanah Rata and must be strategically located. True enough, it is one of those bungalows that overlooked the Tanah Rata town center

It is a large bungalow nestled alongside the other buildings of Governmental organizations. The pump attendant at the Petrol kiosk next to this building is unaware of its existence. That is how informed or interested our general public are . Very pitiful that this aptly conceived idea of a resting place is not well received as a holiday resort. Usual reason - not competitive! So the idea and bungalow stayed abandoned!

The rooms or living quarters were extended to a separate building beside the bungalow.

Also shameful to note that the compound of the Rest House is furbished with an enclosed tennis court. At its heydays, the venue for the Cameron Highlands Tennis Club!

Normally we abstained from comments, but this situation of this Rest House touches our heart. We were not able to probe further as to the actual circumstances surrounding the operation of this Rest House.

New East-West link

At last the main target of our visit to the Cameron Highlands. Progress made to the new East West links.

For record, we have weeks ago seen work progressing Package 2 and this time was the following-through of that visit we made from Simpang Pulai!

Though the road is still not passable, the signboard is erected! From Kampong Raja it is a mere 54 kilometers.

The connecting road to meet up with the new highway is beautifully completed and usable as shown in this photograph

Package 2 the link from Simpang Pulai to an Orang Asli settlement name Lojing, is completed, and the road has been compacted but not surfaced!

Here, this stretch of road from Lojing to Kampong Raja is still under construction.

There were many land clearing from this point onwards, purportedly the direction towards Gua Musang --next stop!
