Pengkalan Hulu Pengkalan Hulu sounds much better than Kroh. The latter reminded Malaysian that it was a frontier town, very remote and still a ruleless county with communist wandering around. |
| It was indeed a frontier town at the
country's border with Thailand. But it is no longer
remote. First class highways now connected the town with
Grik and Baling on the West That is what this signboard shows: Thailand is 7 kilometers away in the north. |
| A glimpse into what this border town looked like. Here are shop houses and coffee shops. Developments was taking place rapidly, this could be the last chance to see wooden shop lots and how Kroh was like.. |
| That across town main trunk road with its road divider. Even at the time when this town was re-built after the 2nd world war, vision was set for a broad Main Street. |
Population in town had increased tremendously with the armed forces and security personnel's at this main border outpost!
| Even
small town has their own recreation park! Kroh had one
with a beautiful lake at the southern edge of town.
This pond is filled with water lilies |

There was nothing in town that would charm visitor in the town itself but the area around Kroh offer a host of wonderful destinations. Not forgetting, on the improved highway from Baling to Kroh, there are still many vantage sites to get good view points of the valley surrounding Baling Rest House in Pengkalan Hulu The Rest House was not difficult to find as there were enough signs to led travelers to its hiding place a stone throw away from the town center. Like almost all Rest Houses this one was clustered together with other administrative buildings. The district information department precedes the Rest House in this looped road. |

We were lucky to find at least one signage to remind visitors that this place was named "Kroh" once upon time. |
| A
more attractive sign board was also installed at one of
the gates, presumed that this one then was the front
gate. From this angle, the Rest house is a modern 2 floors building white washed. On the far end there were 4 more single floor detached chalets. |

An
artificial garden sat in the middle of the paved compound
in front of the Rest House. There is a clearer view of the chalet. The access road to the Rest House follow a one way in and out through the back way. |
| A large lawn complimented the spacious compound in front and this view from the other gate "rear" exit shows the covered car park as well the rear portion of the Rest House. |

In
front of the Rest House was the town Lake garden. Here
the picture was taken from the opposite bank showing the
Rest House and the low hill as backdrop. The small building in front at the edge of the lake was the local Lake View Restaurant. |
|
The concept and the setting for the Kroh Rest House is breath taking. However with the low traffic through town, the place was hardly used. In fact apart from the care takers, it don't seem that the Rest House had been patronized for a long time. Guest, if any, were directed to the Hot spring resort completed recently and privatized. What a pity and waste? |
