Gua Gendang At the height of the emergencies, or in the era of communist insurgents, most villagers living in this remote countryside's were gathered. Like any other districts, they were given a new enclosed settlement called "New Village". In this place the "New Village" was located some 10 kilometers away from the Thai border. Residents then were mainly Chinese farmers and those from Thai descent. |
| Today, after 40 years, this settlement in Tasek named after this lake had changed little. The farmers continued their daily chores and the small community remained perch on a low hill. |

|
This
main road to the village center leads to the police
outpost and the Thai temple stood proudly to welcome few
visitors. Many residents I met, spoke Thai and mandarin with almost no Malaysian language. |
| After the village and into the farms
or rubber estate, there was this attraction of a
cave and a 4 tier waterfall. This signage can only be seen after driving 10 kilometers into the wilderness. No other board was displayed in town. Large signboard contradict the lack of publicity, must be for a reason. Made it even more curious to check out the size and beauty of this cave and waterfall.

A operator was granted a loan and had a couple of beautiful dormitories erected just on top of the cave. Here was a small clearing where the locals parked their motor bikes and we too had our car parked. For a change, there was no hills and no opening in sight at this place. |
|
If you are looking at the sign board and expected some clue as to the way to follow leading to the cave! You will be disappointed. The opening to the cave was down in a the ravine, next to the signboard. |
| The authority had constructed a proper step ways with railings down the steep ravine. Does not necessary mean that there will be no leaches in this concrete path. |

At the bottom. the walkway was supplemented with an elaborate wooden bridge to cross the Baling River and down to the river bank. |
| The huge cave open was well camouflaged with foliages from overhead and the fairly broad river flowing right through. |
|
|
|
Here another view of the wooden bridge and shed |
| Visitors wadding in on the river. Picture can provide an impression as to the size of the river. |

|
Another view of the same scene. At that time, the area was raining and the water was murky yellow. Unlike Tempurong, the water level may rise but will not trap trekkers inside the cave. Still better be prepared as the cave is close to a kilometer long. |

rtco@tm.net.my for guide arrangement. Your Guide! Strongly recommended as this cave had once served as a communist refuge. Do not confuse it the touristy communist tunnels over the border in Betong, Thailand. This is a nature trail, one of our own assets. |
