Nicaragua: Background
Nicaragua is the most severely mine-affected country in Central America. Approximately
100,000 mines remain in Nicaragua. Mined areas are mainly concentrated along the border
with Honduras, as well as in central Nicaragua.
Since the end of the war in 1989-90, a series of mine clearance programs and a national
rehabilitation policy have been instituted. In addition, the Organization of American
States' (OAS) comprehensive mine clearance program operates in Nicaragua -- as well as in
Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica. Primary mine clearance activities in Nicaragua have
been in hydro-electric corridors and northern border areas.
The Central American situation was severely destabilized by the horrific mudslides
which accompanied Hurricane Mitch in November, 1998. AP minefields along the Nicaragua -
Honduras border were displaced, shifting downstream into previously cleared areas. |
